Wajir town is witnessing a surge in infrastructure development, including road construction and rehabilitation projects, as preparations intensify to host this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations.
The works, being undertaken by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), focus on upgrading roads to bitumen standards, rehabilitating existing sections and improving drainage systems across key parts of the town.
“For the authority, we are upgrading roads to bitumen standards. We are also rehabilitating the existing ones and improving drainage works,” said Eng. Pious Ndege, Northeastern Region Engineer at KURA.
He said the upgrading works have been divided into three packages, covering 3.2 kilometres, 4 kilometres and 1.8 kilometres respectively.
In addition, rehabilitation works are ongoing along the stretch from Wajir Airport to the town stadium, covering approximately 8.8 kilometres of tarmac.
Drainage improvement works are also underway, targeting areas from Wajir town to the county assembly and extending towards the stadium.
The infrastructure push comes as the northeastern town prepares to host national Madaraka Day celebrations for the first time, prompting accelerated efforts to enhance its road network and overall urban outlook.
Residents say the developments are already transforming the town and improving mobility while enhancing the business environment.
“The Madaraka Day preparations have brought a lot of development activities including roads. We thank the president, and as the people of Northeastern we say two terms to the president,” said Rukia Abdullahi, a resident.
Public transport operators also welcomed the improvements, citing better road conditions and a positive impact on business.
“I would like to thank the National Government for the ongoing road works. We are really happy and it is improving the appearance of the town. As taxi drivers, we thank the national government,” said Hussein Ahmed, a taxi driver in Wajir.
The projects are part of broader efforts to modernise infrastructure with authorities aiming to ensure Wajir is ready to host the national event.
