Members of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) voted in grassroots elections in Wajir County on Saturday, electing local officials in a process the party says is aimed at strengthening its structures ahead of upcoming political activities.
Polling centres opened at 8AM and closed at 5PM, with party officials reporting a smooth and peaceful exercise.
“We’ve been here since Monday conducting sensitisation for the UDA grassroots elections at the polling centre level,” said Salma Ochieng, a UDA official overseeing the exercise. “Today we held the elections and we are grateful to all members who came out to participate.”
The elections were conducted at the polling centre level and involved seven categories of representatives, including youth, farmers, religious professionals, small business representatives, special interest groups and member representatives.
Ochieng said the process proceeded without major incidents.
“We are content that the elections were free and fair. We have not had any challenges across Wajir County,” she said.
The grassroots polls form part of UDA’s broader strategy to build a strong local leadership base, seen as critical in mobilising support ahead of future political contests, including the 2027 general election.
