The national government  has issued a strong wind alert covering August 18-24, warning residents in parts of northern, eastern and coastal Kenya to take precautions as southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots are expected.

The alert includes Wajir and other counties in northeastern Kenya, where the strong winds could disrupt movement and cause damage to buildings, trees and other structures.

According to a statement from the Office of the Government Spokesperson, the winds are expected to affect parts of northern, eastern and coastal counties, including Turkana, Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir, Lamu, Kilifi and Kitui.

“Strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5m/s) are expected in parts of northern, eastern and coastal counties,” the statement said.

The winds would also affect northwestern Kenya, the southeastern lowlands and the Coast during the alert period.

The forecasted wind speeds are capable of creating hazardous conditions, particularly in exposed areas and locations with unsecured structures. The authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and monitor subsequent weather updates.

Potential hazards include the blowing off of loose roofs, uprooting of trees and breaking of large tree branches. Strong winds may also make movement difficult, particularly for pedestrians.

The Government Spokesperson’s office urged members of the public to remain alert and follow updates issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department.

Residents in affected areas are advised to secure loose roofing materials and other objects that could be blown away by strong winds. People should also exercise caution around trees and structures that may be weakened or unstable.
