Flights to Wajir suspended as runway repairs disrupt travel

Commercial flights to and from Wajir will be temporarily suspended for five days beginning May 8 following ongoing runway maintenance works at Wajir Airport.

In a travel advisory issued on Wednesday, local airlines said they will halt flights to Wajir between May 8 and May 12, citing essential runway repair works.

The airlines asked passengers who had booked travel during the affected period to seek assistance and rebooking arrangements, while customers who used travel agents were advised to contact their respective agencies directly.

The suspension is expected to affect travellers, business operators and government officials who rely on air transport between Nairobi and Wajir, where road travel can take several hours.

The interruption comes as Wajir County prepares for heightened activity linked to upcoming national Madaraka Day celebrations and ongoing development projects within the town, including road rehabilitation and urban upgrades being undertaken by government agencies.

Local business owners expressed concern that the temporary suspension could affect supply chains and delay planned travel for meetings, medical appointments and commercial activities.

Airlines said they regretted the inconvenience caused but described the works as essential, urging affected passengers to coordinate alternative travel arrangements during the suspension period.

Flights are expected to resume once the maintenance works are completed on May 12, according to the advisory.
