Wajir High School alumni to hold annual meeting as officials prepare to unveil six development projects

The Wajir High School Alumni Association will hold its annual general meeting (AGM) on Saturday, July 11, at Wajir High School, where officials say six development projects completed over the past year are expected to be commissioned.

Wajir High School Chief Principal Adan Kassim invited alumni, parents, students and other stakeholders to attend the gathering, saying the event would provide an opportunity to showcase projects undertaken through the alumni association’s support.

“Dear members, your contribution and engagement has been welcomed and very productive. It is a high time that you come and witness what you have done the last one year,” Kassim said.

The projects include an information and communication technology (ICT) hub supported by Safaricom Foundation, twin science laboratories backed by KCB, the purchase of a 51-seater bus, rehabilitation of an older school bus and the installation of energy-saving jiko by NACONEC.

Kassim also said alumni leaders had facilitated the installation of 600 modern beds in the school’s dormitories.

Kassim praised the alumni association’s leadership, saying its executive committee had overseen significant improvements at the school during the past year.

“The old boys and girls… after one year, have done a great job,” he said, while crediting the association’s chairman, executive officials and steering committee for their contributions.

The principal also referred to additional commitments made by government institutions that have yet to be completed.

He said the Ministry of Education had pledged 20 million Kenyan shillings toward construction of the school’s perimeter wall, adding that the commitment had not yet been fulfilled.

He further said the Wajir County government, through the governor, had pledged to drill a borehole for the school, expressing hope that the project would be implemented.

He also encouraged other schools to establish alumni associations, describing them as an important source of support for educational institutions.

Separately, alumni official Abdi Billow urged former students to attend the AGM and formally register as members of the association.

“We are asking the members to turn up in large numbers, register as alumni members,” Billow said. “The registration is just 500 shillings… so that at least you can participate in future elections and take responsibility.”

Billow said registered members would be eligible to vote and contest leadership positions in future association elections, adding that current office holders hoped to hand over responsibilities to younger alumni over time.

“So you cannot be elected or re-elect if you are not a member,” he said.

The AGM comes as alumni associations are increasingly playing a larger role in supporting public schools across Kenya through fundraising, infrastructure development and mentorship programmes.

At Wajir High School, officials say the meeting will serve both as a governance forum for members and an opportunity to showcase projects they say have improved learning and student welfare over the past year.
