Mandera County has rolled out a 13-day livestock treatment and vaccination campaign targeting more than 150,000 animals across four sub-counties, officials said on Tuesday, in a bid to curb disease outbreaks and safeguard pastoral livelihoods.
The Department of Veterinary Services, working with the RACIDA, said the exercise is underway in Elwak, Mandera West, Banissa and Mandera North.
The campaign aims to deworm about 113,220 sheep and goats, treat over 1,350 sick animals and vaccinate 44,000 goats against Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP), a highly infectious disease that affects goats and can cause significant economic losses for herders.
County Chief Officer for Livestock Development and Animal Health Mohamed Adan Issack said the intervention is intended to strengthen the resilience of pastoral communities, whose livelihoods depend heavily on livestock.
“This programme is critical in protecting animal health and sustaining household incomes in our pastoral areas,” Issack said, urging pastoralist families to take advantage.
The county government said the services are being offered free of charge as part of broader efforts to improve animal health and food security in the arid county.
