Security agencies in Mandera County have assured residents of Banisa Sub-County of their safety ahead of Thursday’s by-election.
Mandera County Commissioner James Chacha, speaking during a Regional Multisectoral Coordination and Cooperation Forum in Garissa, said the polls are expected to proceed peacefully, noting that Banisa has recorded no campaign-related incidents.
Chacha praised residents, candidates and political parties for maintaining peace throughout the campaign period.
“So far, so good. Our teams are well prepared. We do not anticipate any violence in Banisa,” Chacha said. “The security situation has remained stable, and our officers are on high alert to ensure the by-election proceeds smoothly.”
He urged eligible voters to turn out in large numbers, assuring them that security arrangements in and around polling stations had been strengthened.
“I urge the people of Banisa to come out and vote. Your safety is guaranteed, and we will ensure a peaceful, transparent and orderly process,” he said.
The by-election has attracted only two candidates: UDA’s Ahmed Malim Hassan and Nurdin Maalim Mohamed of UPA.
Last week, the High Court cleared the UDA candidate to participate in the poll after dismissing a petition that sought to block his candidature over alleged dual citizenship.
With security tightened and legal hurdles cleared, Banisa now heads to the polls.
