Hundreds of Wajir residents gathered at Orahey Grounds on Saturday, lifting their hands to the heavens in a desperate plea for rain as the county faces one of its harshest dry spells.
The Muslim faithful stood shoulder to shoulder, their faces filled with hope and desperation while praying for relief from the biting seaosn that has emptied wells, withered grazing lands, and left livestock weak.
The special Istisqa prayers were led by respected local clerics who urged repentance, humility, and compassion. Their powerful sermons echoed through the crowd, reminding people to turn back to Allah and to live by the true Islamic principles of peace, love, and unity.
“We have widespread injustices that have plagued our county,” said Sheikh Hassan Ahmed, addressing the gathering. “There are bad things happening among us, and that is why Allah has denied us His rain.”
Another cleric, Sheikh Guliye, emphasised the need for sincere repentance, linking the prolonged drought to spiritual decline. “We have to increase repentance and ask Allah to forgive our sins. It is because of our wrongdoings that we are punished with this severe dry spell,” he said.
The scholars spoke candidly about issues they believe have drawn divine displeasure including corruption, injustice, and the erosion of moral values in the society.
“There are so many things that make you feel sick in Wajir these days,” lamented Sheikh Hassan. “The scholars are always talking about the social vices destroying our society, but no one listens.”
Moral laxity

The clerics expressed concern about rising indecency and moral laxity among the youth, citing examples such as young girls riding on boda bodas with men who are not their relatives.
The crowd performed two special units of prayer, forgive each other and dispersed waiting for the skies to open.
However, political leaders and officials were noticeably absent. Only Wajir Municipal Manager, Mr. Omar Shano, attended the event, quietly standing among the faithful.
The Deyr rains have so far failed across much of Wajir, leaving herders desperate for water and pasture.
