Wajir residents gathered at Orahey Grounds  on Sunday to mark World Peace Day. It was a colourful celebration filled with song, prayer, and joy.

The people of Wajir were not just celebrating a global day of peace. They were also marking a proud milestone that their county has been recognised as the safest in Kenya.

The event, organised by the County Directorate of Peace Building, brought together elders, women, youth, religious leaders, and government officials.

Speaking during the event , the Wajir County Director of Peace Building, Mr. Adan Abdi Ahmed, said the achievement was the result of unity.

“Wajir County is the safest county in Kenya. That did not come easily. It was a collaboration effort by the County Government, the National Government, peace elders, women, youth and religious leaders.”

Veteran peace elder Mr. Mohamed Dagane reminded the crowd of how far the county had come.

“Today we gathered here to celebrate World Peace Day. We are very proud that Wajir is one of the safest counties in this country. We have to thank God for all those blessings. This was a joint effort by all stakeholders.”

Dagane, however, warned that the fight was not yet over.

“The only problem we have in this town which we want to tackle is the problem of drugs. With cooperation from all stakeholders, we are going to win, God willing.”

He also urged the people of Wajir not to forget those suffering in other parts of the world.

“The World Peace is not complete because women and children are suffering in Gaza. We have also the Rohingyas who are suffering. We will tell the world led by the big five that they should do something to make sure there is peace in Gaza, there is peace for the Rohingya, and there is peace in Ukraine.”

A retired Administration Police Commandant, Mr. Mohamed Sheikh, echoed the same feelings.

“As people of Wajir we are leading in peace. We are peace-loving people. We are happy, but we are also saddened by the wars in Sudan and Gaza. Innocent children are being bombarded and killed. Let us pray for them.”

Peace Actors 

Women, who have long played a central role in peacebuilding in Wajir, also took the stage. Ms. Halima Ahmed, a local peace actor, told the gathering:

“We are here to promote peace and stability in our county. We are here to enhance cohesion and integration among the neighbourhoods.”

Her colleague, Ms. Fatuma Abdullahi, said the day was an opportunity to reflect. “Today as we stand here, it is an important day for us. It is a day that is celebrated countrywide, regionally and globally. It is a day we need to speak about the achievements we made. It is a day we need to speak about violences, discrimination and inequalities.”

Their words reminded the community that peace is more than the absence of fighting, it also means fairness and equality.

Message from officials 

Officials present also praised Wajir residents for protecting peace. From the County Commissioner’s Office, Mr. Alex Mureithi said:

“Let’s celebrate the achievements that Wajir is the safest county. This did not come for free; it is because stakeholders have taken up their responsibilities .”

The County Executive Committee Member  for Special Programmes, Mr. Khalif Abdi, added: “Wajir has been marked and labelled as the safest county. Let us keep that motto.”

Residents left Orahey Grounds with pride in their county, but also with prayers for the wider world. From Sudan to Gaza, Ukraine to Myanmar, the people of Wajir carried one message that “peace in one corner of the world means little unle’s it is shared everywhere.’
