Residents of Cairo Village, located east of Wajir town, have appealed to the County Government of Wajir to urgently address a worsening water shortage that has disrupted daily life in the community.
Speaking on Tuesday, village chairman Abdullahi Omar said the community was enduring severe hardship after their solar-powered water system failed to delivery adequate water, leaving households without reliable access to water.
“We are appealing to our honorable government to come to our aid. We do not have water here. The solar powered machine is down. It cannot sustain the capacity, especially because it lacks adequate battery backups,” he said
Long-time resident Dahaba Abdi, voiced similar concerns. “As residents of Cairo, why are we forgotten? We do not have water. Come and visit us, see our health facility, the water source, and how we live here,” she urged.
Responding to the outcry, County Executive Committee Member for Water, Mr. Issa Garore, acknowledged that they have received the residents’ complains and assured that the county government was taking steps to resolve the crisis.
“We are in receipt of the complaints of the residents. The solar power was unable to operate the machine due to inadequate sunlight in recent days. Our next course of action is to provide a generator for the village once the procurement process is finalised,” Garore told Wajir Today
He added that in the interim, the county would continue to support the community through emergency measures, including water trucking, to ease the immediate burden on households.
The water shortage in Cairo village highlights the broader challenges of water access in arid regions like Wajir, where communities remain vulnerable to climatic fluctuations and infrastructure limitations.
