Wajir communities grappling with recurring droughts and climate-related shocks are set to benefit from enhanced disaster preparedness following a capacity-building initiative led by Islamic Relief Kenya, with support from Islamic Relief USA.
A total of 56 participants from Habaswein and Hadado Sub-Counties recently underwent comprehensive training on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM). The participants included ward committee representatives and heads of key sub-county government departments such as public works, livestock and veterinary services, agriculture, water, and disaster management.
The training, conducted under the Building Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change Project, focused on the core phases of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
According to organisers, the initiative is designed to strengthen community resilience by equipping leaders and residents with the skills and tools needed to reduce risks and respond effectively to climate-induced challenges.
Islamic Relief Kenya noted that the programme underscores the importance of empowering local communities to adapt to an increasingly unpredictable climate and safeguard their livelihoods.
