Calm is slowly returning to the Bulti-Looni area, located approximately 18 kilometres from Arbajahan in Wajir West Constituency, following recent clashes that left two people dead and several others injured.
In response to the violence, a multi-stakeholder peace initiative is currently underway, led by Wajir West Member of Parliament Yussuf Mohamed Farah, community elders, and religious leaders. The mediation team has been engaging members of the two brotherly sub-clans involved in the conflict, seeking to prevent further aggression and foster sustainable peace in the area.
According to local sources, the clashes were triggered by a disputed establishment of a new settlement, an issue that has historically been a flashpoint for tension and conflict in many parts of the North Eastern region.
Security and government officials have been on the ground since the incident occurred, working alongside elders and religious leaders to ease tensions and support reconciliation efforts.
Wajir County Police Commander John Gachohi confirmed the ongoing collaborative peacebuilding efforts in the area.
“There have been reconciliation efforts since the occurrence of the unfortunate incident,” Mr. Gachohi told Wajir Today. “It started with respected peace elders and the Subcounty security committee, followed by the Area MP and elders.”
Mr. Gachohi noted that the Wajir County Security Committee is expected to reinforce the community-led peace initiatives with institutional support and oversight.
“Today, the Governor and the county security committee will be preaching peace and reconciliation in the same area,” he added.
The two sub-clans involved in the confrontation have since reached an agreement to cease hostilities and have committed to a structured negotiation process aimed at building lasting peace.
Local political leaders, including Members of Parliament and Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), have urged communities to avoid further escalation and instead embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
As the reconciliation efforts continue, residents of Wajir West are hopeful that the intervention by elders, leaders, and security agencies will restore the longstanding harmony that the constituency has been known for.
