Wajir Governor Dismisses Boycott Claims Ahead of Madaraka Day Celebrations

Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi on Wednesday dismissed reports circulating on social media that some lawmakers from the county planned to boycott upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations, saying the county’s political leadership would attend the national event in full.

Speaking during Eidul Adha prayers at Hodan Primary School playground in Wajir town, Ahmed said claims of divisions among leaders ahead of the June 1 celebrations were false and misleading.

“All MPs will attend the Madaraka celebrations. What is being spread on social media platforms is not true,” the governor said. “The MPs are part and parcel of the preparations for the celebrations.”

The annual Madaraka Day event, which commemorates Kenya’s attainment of internal self-rule in 1963, will for the first time be hosted in the northeastern county of Wajir.

The celebrations will be graced by President William Ruto and senior government officials at the newly constructed Wajir Stadium.

Ahmed, who also chairs Council of Governors, described the hosting of the national celebrations as a milestone for the region and urged residents to turn out in large numbers.

“For the first time, Wajir County and the entire North Eastern region will host Madaraka Day celebrations, a milestone that reflects the remarkable progress and growing national significance of our region,” he said.

Preparations for the event have transformed the county headquarters in recent weeks, with infrastructure upgrades, rehearsals by security forces and heightened public activity drawing national attention.

The governor also used the Eid gathering to call for unity and social responsibility among residents as the county prepares to receive visitors from across Kenya.

He urged residents to maintain cleanliness in the town and said rapid economic activity linked to construction and other sectors should not come at the expense of local cultural and religious values.

“As Wajir continues to grow and attract Kenyans from across the country working in various sectors, we must equally remain steadfast in protecting our identity,” he said. “Our morals, traditions and Islamic faith remain the cornerstone of our foundation.”

The Eid prayers and public address were attended by Wajir Senator Abass Sheikh and Wajir North Mp Ibrahim Abdi Saney, in a show of unity among local leaders.
