The electoral commission said Wajir County has reached about 70% of its voter registration target with five days remaining before the deadline, urging eligible residents to enroll without expectation for an extension.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan told stakeholders at a monitoring and sensitisation meeting on Wednesday that the ongoing Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise was progressing well.
“We are at about 70–71% of our target in Wajir and we hope by the end of the remaining five days we will have reached 100%,” Hassan said. “The time is now. Don’t wait for tomorrow. We are not considering an extension at this stage.”
The commissioner said the exercise aimed to ensure all eligible Kenyans are registered ahead of next year’s elections, calling on residents across the county to take advantage of the remaining window.
Local leaders at the meeting cited logistical constraints as a key barrier to achieving full registration in the vast county.
Wajir gubernatorial aspirant Hassan Mohamed said geographic disparities required tailored approaches, noting that Wajir’s size posed challenges not faced by smaller constituencies.
“Wajir covers about 60,000 square kilometres. It cannot be treated the same as smaller constituencies in terms of timelines and logistics,” he said, urging the commission to consider special measures to reach remote populations.
About 16,000 new voters had registered so far against a target of 23,000 as stakeholders are calling on unregistered residents to act before the deadline.
Wajir East parliamentary aspirant Ismail Sheikh urged unregistered voters to turnup before the deadline expires.
“Those who have not registered should not count on an extension. They need to register urgently,” he said, adding that verification processes were being emphasised to ensure accuracy and prevent irregularities, including the registration of non-residents.
The electoral body has been conducting the ECVR exercise nationwide as part of preparations for the next general election, with a focus on increasing voter turnout and updating the national register.
