The Office of Chief Kadhi has invited Muslim religious organisations and key stakeholders to participate in a national moon-sighting exercise that will determine the end of Ramadan and the date of Eid celebrations.

In a letter, the Office of the Acting Chief Kadhi said the session will be held on the evening of March 19 at the Kadhi’s Court in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area.

The exercise it says will play a central role in advising the government and the public on the official commencement and conclusion of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

“The Office of the Chief Kadhi… traditionally advises the Government and the general public on the commencement and conclusion of the Holy Month of Ramadan and the declaration of the two Eids,” the notice stated.

The moon-sighting process is a key religious practice used to mark the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide. The sighting of the new crescent moon signals the beginning of Eid al-Fitr, one of the most significant holidays in the Islamic calendar.

The Judiciary has invited a broad range of Islamic institutions to take part in the exercise, including the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK), the Jamia Mosque Committee in Nairobi, and the Fatwa Council of Kenya.

Other invited participants include the Kenya Muslim National Advisory Council (KEMNAC), the Muslim Disciplined Services Chaplaincy, East Africa Moon Sighting representatives, as well as academic institutions such as Umma University and the Islamic University of Kenya.

Youth and humanitarian organisations, including the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) and Direct Aid, have also been invited.

Meanwhile, Muslims worldwide  are awaiting confirmation of the end of Ramadan after Saudi Arabia Supreme Court announced it will look for the Shawwal crescent moon on March 18, a move that will determine the date of Eid al-Fitr.

According to the court, the sighting of the new crescent on Wednesday evening will decide whether the Islamic holiday falls on March 19 or March 20.
