Eldas MP’s Planned Development Tour Sparks Political Firestorm

A planned development tour of Eldas Constituency by MP Adan Keynan has triggered a sharp political backlash, with a former parliamentary aspirant dismissing the exercise as a public relations stunt.

Hon. Ahmed Boray Arale, who contested the Eldas parliamentary seat in the 2022 General Election questioned the MP’s constituency development assessment.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Thursday, Boray questioned the timing and intent of the proposed tour, saying it followed years of complaints over alleged mismanagement of development projects.

“After years of residents raising serious concerns about mismanagement in Eldas, it’s telling that you now want to take journalists on a guided ‘development assessment tour’ so they can ‘see for themselves’,” Boray said.

He challenged the MP to go beyond what he described as a choreographed visit, calling instead for a public accountability forum involving residents and stakeholders.

“If you truly believe in transparency, don’t stage a PR trip. Do full accountability in the open. We are ready for an open, public accountability forum, not a staged tour,” Boray added.

The remarks have intensified debate in Eldas, where development outcomes and the use of public funds have become increasingly sensitive political issues.

MP Keynan had earlier announced plans to host a two-week constituency-wide development tour, inviting journalists, stakeholders and members of the public to assess projects on the ground.

In his statement, Keynan said the initiative was aimed at addressing what he termed misleading narratives surrounding development in Northern Kenya.

“Following sustained public discourse on the state of development in Northern Kenya, largely framed within the context of historical marginalisation, the roles of the National Government, County Governments and the NG-CDF have come under heightened scrutiny,” he said.

He noted that Eldas Constituency had featured prominently in the national debate, prompting him to take what he described as a deliberate and transparent step to showcase development gains.

“To decisively dispel misleading narratives and affirm verifiable development achievements, I have invited stakeholders and interested parties to a constituency-wide assessment,” Keynan stated.

The political exchange stems from the impact of the Gachagua debate that reignited fresh calls for an end to corruption and mismanagement of public funds in order to address gaps in Northern Kenya Development.
