Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a woman in Garissa over remarks made in a viral video that authorities say could undermine national cohesion.
The suspect, identified as Sahara Ahmed, was taken into custody following what the DCI described as a “swift and thorough review” of footage widely circulated on social media platforms.
In a statement on Sunday, the DCI said the comments captured in the clip were deemed inciteful, prompting an inquiry to establish the context and intent behind the remarks.
Ahmed is being held in custody and is expected to be arraigned in court once processing is complete, the agency said, without providing further details on the charges.
The DCI reiterated that while freedom of expression is guaranteed under Kenya’s Constitution, it must be exercised responsibly and within the law. Authorities warned that statements likely to fuel division, hatred or disrupt peaceful coexistence would be handled firmly.
