The Garissa Airstrip is undergoing a transformation aimed at turning the facility into a modern regional aviation hub.
Principal Secretary for the State Department of Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, said the upgrade is being implemented through a phased programme supported by the national government.
“The development is designed to make Garissa Airstrip fully functional, enhancing trade, investment, and emergency response in the wider region,” Dr. Omollo said.
Phase One of the project, overseen by the Ministry of Defence, focused on security, with the construction of a full perimeter fence to safeguard the airstrip and its operations.
Phase Two, led by the Garissa County Government, is now at 85 per cent completion. It involves the construction of a new terminal building with facilities to support passengers and operational efficiency.
Planned amenities include an arrival hall, Kenya Airports Authority offices, a check-in waiting bay, VIP lounge, prayer and ablution areas, shops, a search room, and expanded parking.
“The new terminal is designed to improve the travel experience while supporting the operational needs of airlines and passengers,” Dr. Omollo noted.
Phase Three, set to be completed by April, will extend the runway by 1.5 kilometres and rehabilitate the taxiway and apron. This will allow the airstrip to accommodate larger aircraft and support daily flights to Nairobi.
Officials say the upgraded airstrip will also enhance critical services, including medical evacuations and humanitarian relief, strengthening the region’s emergency response capabilities.
