The national government is racing to complete key infrastructure projects in Wajir County ahead of this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, with officials expressing confidence that preparations are on track.

A delegation led by the Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration Dr Raymond Omolo, who also chairs the National Steering Committee for the celebrations, visited Wajir to assess progress on the projects, including the main venue, Wajir Stadium.

“Why we are here is basically just to be able to assess the progress of preparations for this year’s Madraka Day, which will be hosted by the county of Wajir,” Omolo said. “And His Excellency the President will be presiding over the celebrations.”

He said work at the stadium, which will host the event, was advancing steadily.

“If you look around, there’s accelerated progress of works currently at 28%. We expect that all this will be done and dusted and ready for celebrations by the second week of May of this year,” he said.

Omolo said preparations extend beyond the stadium to several other facilities, including the county commissioner’s residence, which will host a presidential luncheon, and upgrades at Wajir International Airport.

“There’s works that is currently going on on the taxiway, the apron. We expect that the terminal building construction will begin sometimes within the month of April,” he said, adding the improvements would help separate military and civilian operations and support travel.

He also cited road works, electricity upgrades and water supply improvements as part of the preparations.

“Overall on behalf of the National Celebrations Committee, we are satisfied with the progress of works. We are satisfied with the preparations for this year’s Madaraka Day celebration,” Omolo said.

Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi said the county was encouraged by the pace of development, including the stadium project.

“And we’ve been assured by the contractor that by the 15th of May this stadium will be 100% ready,” Abdullahi said.

He also highlighted long-standing infrastructure needs, particularly at the airport.

“We’ve been crying for a commercial terminal at the airport,” he said, adding that construction had begun following a directive by the president.

Abdullahi said efforts were also underway to improve electricity supply in the town, which currently relies on diesel generation, expressing optimism about plans to connect the region to the national grid.

“So we’re very happy with the progress of the work,” he said.
