Religious leaders in Wajir County have hailed the passage of the Wajir County Miraa and Other Substances Control Act 2025, calling it a historic step in protecting communities from the dangers of drug and substance abuse.

The legislation was signed into law by Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, cementing regulations that govern the sale, distribution, and use of miraa and other substances across the county.

Speaking a day after the bill’s enactment, Dr. Adan Yunis Sheikh, Regional Coordinator for Supkem, said the law had received unified support from religious institutions across Wajir.

“I take this moment to express my sincere gratitude to His Excellency, Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, for signing this landmark Act,” Dr. Adan said. “It reinforces essential protections for schools, places of worship, hospitals, and residential areas by establishing clear rules governing substances that threaten the wellbeing of our community.”

Religious leaders said the law is a critical tool in safeguarding children and youth, who they say have been particularly vulnerable to substance abuse in recent years.

The legislation was passed by the Wajir County Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Abdille Yussuf.

Dr. Adan commended the commitment of local lawmakers, noting that their work reflected a collaboration between political and religious leaders.

“This Act is a vital milestone for the people of Wajir County,” he said. “On behalf of all religious leaders, I deliver this vote of thanks and reaffirm our shared commitment to protecting our community.”

The bill’s passage marks a tangible step, introducing measures that designate where and how Miraa can be sold.
