Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Morocco’s Draa-Tafilalet region, setting the stage for cooperation on renewable energy, agriculture, and water management.
The deal aims to tackle some of Wajir’s toughest challenges that includes water scarcity, poor agricultural productivity, and unreliable energy. It also positions the county to learn from Morocco’s success in managing semi-arid conditions.
Governor Abdullahi said the agreement is a “major step” towards lasting solutions. “We aim to adapt proven systems such as efficient irrigation, drought-resistant crops, and solar power for remote areas,” he noted.
The Draa-Tafilalet Region, located in southeastern Morocco, is known for its oasis-based agriculture and renewable energy projects under the Green Morocco Plan. Wajir hopes to draw lessons from these models to improve food security and resource management.
Officials accompanying the governor included the County Speaker, Hon. Abdille Yussuf Mohamed among other county officials.
Under the new deal, Wajir expects to upgrade its water infrastructure, boost crop yields, and expand access to affordable energy. The cooperation will also involve knowledge exchange between experts from both regions.
The MoU is expected to pave the way for pilot projects in renewable energy, irrigation, and water harvesting, key areas that could help make Wajir more resilient to climate shocks.
