Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has been retained as the Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) following a consensus election held on Monday at the CoG offices in Delta Centre, Westlands.
Governor Abdullahi, who now enters his second term as the head of the influential inter-county body, was unanimously endorsed by his colleagues during a full council meeting conducted in line with the Intergovernmental Relations Act, 2012.
Abdullahi expressed deep gratitude for the continued confidence shown in his leadership and pledged to uphold the principles of devolution with renewed vigour.
“It is with profound gratitude and deep humility that I accept the immense trust you have placed in me to continue serving as Chairperson of this distinguished body for a second term,” he said. “This election is not just a personal honour, but a testament to our collective commitment to stable and collaborative leadership.”
The Wajir Governor reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening the mandate of the Council and safeguarding the spirit of devolution, which he described as the foundation of Kenya’s governance transformation.
“As we embark on this new chapter together, I, alongside the entire Council leadership, pledge our unwavering commitment to strengthening the mandate of this Council and fiercely protecting the spirit of devolution,” he stated.
Abdullahi also congratulated Nyeri Governor Dr. Mutahi Kahiga, who was elected as the Vice-Chairperson, and Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, who will serve as the Council Whip.
He further extended best wishes to the newly appointed committee chairpersons, urging unity and collaboration in advancing the devolution agenda.
“Together, as a united team, I am confident that we will work tirelessly to ensure that the dream of devolution is not just protected but fully realised for the benefit of every single Kenyan,” Abdullahi added.
Governor Ahmed Abdullahi’s re-election comes at a time when counties continue to push for timely disbursement of funds and enhanced intergovernmental coordination.
