Wajir Deputy Governor Ahmed Muhumed has urged President William Ruto to step up and protect Kenya’s devolution dream, warning that structural bottlenecks and claw backs are threatening service delivery in the counties.
Speaking on Monday during Mashujaa Day celebrations in Wajir, the deputy governor made an appeal to the Head of State, describing the devolved system as the lifeline of Kenya’s growth and progress.
“To President Ruto, devolution is facing some structural bottlenecks, some claw backs that are hindering service delivery at county levels,” he said. “We urge you, ask you, and request you to please be the champion of devolution, just as your long-term friend Raila Odinga was.”
Mr Muhumed emphasised that the success of the nation’s development agenda largely depends on the counties’ ability to deliver basic services effectively, saying Kenya’s transformation “will develop largely because of the services being delivered at county levels.”
In a heartfelt moment, the deputy governor also paid tribute to the late Raila Odinga, calling his death a monumental loss to Kenya’s political landscape and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) family.
“We lost an icon, a true leader of Kenya and a party leader of ODM,” he said.
Mr Muhumed rallied ODM members to honour Raila’s legacy by uniting and revitalising the party ahead of the next general election.
“This is a time for introspection. This is a time to come together, strengthen the party and ensure that we assume power in the coming election in one way or another. We either form the government or be part of that government, inshallah,” he declared, urging members to “synchronise our efforts, break barriers and strengthen this party.”
