Wajir County Government on Friday launched a food distribution programme to support tens of thousands of vulnerable families in drought-hit areas as communities continue to struggle with prolonged dry conditions.
Ahmed Abdullahi, the governor of Wajir, said the county government had begun distributing 915 tonnes of food supplies under its annual Ramadan iftar support initiative.
The programme aims to reach about 40,000 households across all 30 wards, according to a statement from the office of the Governor.
The supplies include sifted maize, fortified porridge flour, dates and cooking oil, and will also be provided to orphanages, dialysis patients and people living with disabilities, the governor said.
County officials flagged off the deliveries at the start of the Muslim holy month, when many families rely on communal support to break the daily fast.
“This initiative has been our tradition every Ramadhan. However, this year’s launch comes at a time when our people continue to face the effects of drought that has affected livelihoods across the County.” the Governor said
Wajir County has been ravaged by a crippling drought condition, with erratic rainfall and rising temperatures undermining pastoral livelihoods .
Abdullahi also acknowledged support from the national government in helping respond to the crisis.
“I appreciate the National Government for its partnership and continued support in helping us mitigate the ongoing drought” he added
Currently, Wajir is classified in crisis phase of the droguth where about 20 percent of the population, roughly 174,200 people, are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance.
