Basic education institutions across the country will reopen for the 2026 academic year on Monday, January 5 2026.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said all public basic education schools are expected to resume learning as scheduled, with measures in place to ensure a smooth start to the term.

In a statement issued on January 2, Ogamba said Ministry of Education field officers will be deployed nationwide to monitor compliance with the academic calendar as schools reopen.

The officers will operate under the supervision of Regional and County Directors of Education. The CS also gave an update on the placement of learners into Grade 10 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

He said the first revision of Grade 10 placements was completed on December 29, 2025, with joining instructions made available on the Ministry’s placement portal from December 30.

Parents and learners seeking a further review of placements will have another window between January 6 and January 9, 2026.

Ogamba said the review process is strictly limited to genuine and verifiable cases and must be initiated through a learner’s Junior School or the Senior School of interest.

All requests, he added, must be submitted by the head of the institution through the official placement portal.

To ensure uninterrupted learning, the government has released Sh44.245 billion in capitation funds for Term One of the 2026 academic year.

The allocation includes Sh3.7 billion for Free Primary Education, Sh14.46 billion for Free Day Junior School Education, and Sh26.08 billion for Free Day Secondary Education.

Ogamba said the funding will allow schools to run smoothly from the first day of term. Grade 10 learners are expected to report to their respective Senior Schools starting January 12, 2026.

He also moved to reassure parents on school fees, confirming that charges in senior schools will remain unchanged.

The government will continue to provide capitation at a rate of Sh22,244 per learner per year. Ogamba warned school heads and principals against imposing extra levies or misusing public funds.

He said the Ministry will take firm action against any verified cases of illegal charges or misappropriation.

The government, he added, remains focused on stability, access and accountability as the new academic year begins.
