The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Culture, Arts and Heritage, Ms Ummi Bashir, on Friday led hundreds of residents, students, and government officers in commemorating Mazingira Day through a large-scale tree-planting and environmental stewardship exercise at Senior Chief Ogle Girls Secondary School in Habaswein, Wajir County.
The event, held in collaboration with the Wajir County administration, brought together officials from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the National Police Service (NPS), the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), and members of the local community, all joining hands to boost the county’s reforestation and climate resilience efforts.
Ms Bashir said the team planted a total of 1,600 tree seedlings, marking a significant contribution to the national reforestation drive and reaffirming the government’s resolve to mitigate the effects of climate change in arid and semi-arid regions.
“This initiative aligns with His Excellency the President’s 15 billion trees campaign and underscores our government’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for generations to come,” she said
Wajir County Commissioner Karuku Ngomo accompanied the PS during the tree planting exercise that is expected to transform local environment and enhance biodiversity.
Mazingira Day, marked annually across Kenya, promotes environmental protection, tree planting, and climate change awareness.
