After nearly three decades of chronic water scarcity, residents of Gerilley in Wajir South can finally access water following the successful drilling of a new borehole.
The borehole, located 10 kilometres from Gerilley town, struck abundant underground water, officials confirmed.
Plans are underway to connect the site to a piping system, which will deliver water directly to homes, ending years of daily struggle for the community.
Wajir South MP Mohamed Adow described the milestone as a “decisive step forward” for the residents. “Gerilley borehole has struck abundant, potable water, ending 29 years of water scarcity for the area,” he said. “Access to water is not a privilege; it is a right. Today, Gerilley takes a step toward dignity, relief, and renewed hope.”
The project was made possible through collaboration with the Deriswanaag Project and the British High Commission, who provided technical and financial support.
The borehole marks a major breakthrough in Wajir South’s ongoing efforts to address water deprivation, a persistent challenge in much of Wajir County.
