New Generator Arrives as Wajir Battles Worsening Power Shortages

After months of persistent electricity shortages that have disrupted businesses, health facilities, and daily life, Wajir Town has received a new power generator aimed at easing the strain on its overwhelmed energy system.

The town has faced rolling blackouts and  rationing, with residents and traders repeatedly raising concerns over the instability of supply.

On Sunday, Wajir East MP Aden Daud Mohamed confirmed that a generator had been delivered. ENCOMM machine  arrived on Thursday following what the MP described as continuous follow-up by his office.

The generator has a rated capacity of 1 megawatt, with an effective output of 0.7 megawatts. Installation work is currently underway. Once operational, it is expected to raise Wajir’s overall production capacity from 2.3MW to 3MW.

Despite the boost, the town’s peak demand stands at roughly 3.3MW, leaving a remaining shortfall even after installation.

A second generator of similar capacity is expected before the end of the month. Authorities say the additional unit could provide a more meaningful buffer, especially during peak consumption hours.

“A second generator of similar capacity is expected before the end of the month, which will help further stabilize supply.” The MP said

He added that Longer-term plans are also in motion with the Ministry of Energy issuing a request for proposal for an 8MW solar hybrid project intended to provide a more sustainable and reliable supply.

The MP noted that although generators offer short-term relief, they remain prone to breakdowns.

“Although generators are essential for now, they are still machines subject to breakdowns. They are not permanent solution”

Leaders from Wajir and Mandera have renewed calls for the national electricity grid to be extended from Isiolo or Garissa to Mandera, a project they say would significantly improve power reliability across the region if approved.
