The Office of the Acting Chief Kadhi has issued a nationwide call for Muslims to be vigilant in sighting the crescent moon that marks the start of Ramadhan 1447 A.H.
In an official public notice released on Thursday, the Acting Chief Kadhi, Hon. Sukyan H. Omar, confirmed that the office will receive and verify reports on the crescent on the evening of Tuesday, 17 February 2026, which falls on 29th Sha’aban.
“All Muslims across the country are hereby requested to be on the lookout for the crescent (hilal) on that evening,” the notice reads. Verified sightings are to be promptly conveyed to the Office of the Ag. Chief Kadhi via phone on 0794 339 467.
The notice emphasises that reports may also be submitted through local religious authorities, including Kadhis, Imams, recognised scholars, Muslim organisations, and community leaders. These reports will then be verified centrally by the Chief Kadhi’s office to determine the official start of Ramadhan.
Hon. Omar appealed for public cooperation, describing the exercise as an important religious observance. “Your cooperation in this important religious observance is highly appreciated. May Allah (SWT) grant us the blessing of witnessing the month of Ramadhan in faith, unity, and good health,” the notice adds.
Kenya’s Muslim community is now preparing for a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection, with mosques and Islamic centres expected to coordinate closely with the Ag. Chief Kadhi’s office to confirm the sighting.
