Mandera County Government on Thursday launched a countywide food distribution programme targeting 40,000 vulnerable households as worsening drought conditions continue to strain livelihoods and push thousands of families into food insecurity.
The programme is part of the county government’s expanded drought response aimed at providing immediate food assistance, preventing further deterioration of nutrition, and protecting vulnerable communities from deeper crisis.
Mandera Governor Hon. Mohamed Adan Khalif said prolonged dry conditions across Mandera have significantly reduced access to food and water, weakened livestock production, and increased dependency on humanitarian assistance.
“The prolonged drought has placed significant pressure on livelihoods, reduced access to food, and increased vulnerability among many households.” The Governor said
According to the county government, the programme is designed not only to provide short-term relief but also to stabilise household food consumption and prevent negative coping mechanisms such as asset sales, school dropouts, and reduced meal intake.
“Through this intervention, we aim to provide immediate relief, protect livelihoods, and safeguard the dignity and well-being of our people, especially the most vulnerable members of our communities.” The Governor added
The Governor further revealed that the county has scaled up a multi-sectoral drought response that includes strengthening early warning and response mechanisms, expanding water access interventions, supporting livestock health services, and enhancing nutrition and health programmes, while working closely with the national government and humanitarian partners.
The county acknowledged the role of development partners in complementing government efforts.
“I wish to acknowledge and appreciate the significant contributions of our development partners in supporting drought-affected communities across the county.”
With the launch of the new countywide distribution, Mandera County says its drought response interventions now cover a total of 56,500 households.
