Wajir County Referral Hospital has received a vital donation of medical equipment, alongside specialised staff training, aimed at saving mothers and newborns.
The donation, coordinated by Baitulmal Kenya with support from the Gates Foundation and Every Pregnancy, includes five delivery beds with rails, five baby coats, an electric suction machine, and a high-powered LED examination light.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mr. Issadin Haji, Communications Officer at Baitulmal Kenya, emphasised the timing and importance of the contribution. “These are essential items that the maternity unit needed most. They will go a long way in boosting the capacity of the medical staff to carry out their duties efficiently,” he said.
In addition to equipment, a five-day intensive training for nurses was conducted, focusing on enhancing clinical skills and emergency response during childbirth. Mr. Haji described this as a key step in empowering the hospital staff to provide better care under challenging circumstances.
“Baitulmal has been supporting communities here for years, contributing to health, education, and water projects.” he added, acknowledging the support of Wajir County Department of Health and Baitulmal staff who worked to make the initiative a success.
Mr. Hassan Abass, representing Wajir County Medical Department, underlined the urgency of the intervention. “These new delivery beds, baby coats, suction machines, and examination lights are critical for our maternity and newborn units,” he stated.
